Definition of Fly for it

Anciently, it was the custom in a criminal trial to inquire after a verdict, "Did he fly for it?” After the verdict, even if not guilty, forfeiture of goods followed conviction upon such inquiry. Abolished by 7 & 8 Geo. IV, c. 28.
