Definition of Feudalism

The feudal system; the aggregate of feudal principles and usages. The social, political, and economic system that dominated the major European nations between the ninth and fifteenth centuries. The system was based upon a servile relationship between a "vassal” and a "lord.” The vassal paid homage and service to the lord and the lord provided land and protection to the vassal.
