Originally, the collection of sheets of paper or other substances on which entries could be made, either written or printed. People ex rel. Lichtenstein v. Langan, 196 N.Y. 260, 89 N.E. 921, 922, 25 L.R.A.,N.S., 479, 17 Ann. Cas. 1081. The term now commonly denotes the recording or registering of bets or wagers on any trial or contest of speed or power of endurance or selling pools. People of State of New York v. Bennett, C.C.N.Y., 113 Fed. 515, 516. A species of betting on horse races. Ex parte Hernan, 45 Tex.Cr.R. 343, 77 S.W. 225, 226. The bets are booked or a record kept of them in a book. Spies v.
