A brown to black, solid bituminous substance occurring native at the Dead Sea, in Trinidad, and elsewhere, and also obtained as a residue from petroleum, coal tar, lignite tar, etc., and consists chiefly of a mixture of hydrocarbons and varies from hard and brittle to plastic forms.
