What is ARTIFICE? Definition of ARTIFICE in Black's Law Dictionary

An ingenius contrivance or device of some kind, and, when used in a bad sense, it corresponds with trick or fraud. United States v. Corlin, D.C.Cal., 44 F.Supp. 940, 943. It implies craftiness and deceit, and imports some element of moral obliquity. Davis v. Boston Elevated Ry. Co., 235 Mass. 482, 126 N.E. 841, 845; Finch v. Gibson, 140 Tenn. 134, 203 S.W. 759, 761.

A representation contrary to a well-known fact, such as a representation that pregnancy will not result from natural sexual intercourse, will not constitute artifice, deception, or promises.
