The term is said to derive from two sources, "apparel" from the Latin "ad," meaning to, and "par," meaning equal, to point out the means by which outwardly one keeps even or in line with his group or class. In re Steimes' Estate, 270 N.Y.S. 339, 150 Misc. 279 (a will case).
