What is COMMENCEMENT OF A DECLARATION? Definition of COMMENCEMENT OF A DECLARATION in Black's Law Dictionary - Legal dictionary - Glossary of legal terms.

That part of the declaration which follows the venue and precedes the circumstantial statement of the cause of action.
It formerly contained a statement of the names of the parties, and the character in which they sue or are sued, if any other than their natural capacity; of the mode in which the defendant had been brought into court, and a brief statement of the form of action. In modern practice, however, in most cases, it contains little else then the names and character of the parties.
