Lat. In the civil law. The obligation on successors to an inheritance to return to the common inheritance gifts received from the ancestor during his lifetime. In re Farmers' Loan & Trust Co., 163 N.Y.S. 961, 967, 99 Misc. 420; In re Farmers' Loan & Trust Co., 168 N.Y.S. 952, 956, 181 App.Div. 642. A joining together or contribution of goods into a common fund.

This occurs where a portion of money, advanced by the father to a son or daughter, is brought into hotchpot, in order to have an equal distributory share of his personal estate at his death. See Collation.
